Tutorial: Bag ‘O Treats!

On 17, Oct 2009 | No Comments | In Crafty Crafts, Tutorials | By Heather

I’ll admit it…I take my own treats into the movies. Let’s be completely honest though- would you spend $5 for a water bottle, or $50 for a container of popcorn? These numbers might be a bit of an exaggeration, but probably not too far off. One time I asked for a cup of ice because I was pregnant and craving it, and they said they’d only give it to me if I paid full price for the $20 soda…Umm…I don’t think so! If a manager approached me about my candy-smuggling I would let him know how I felt about their ridiculous concession prices (I’d try to keep my conversation PG-13 rated).

On a happier note, yesterday before we went to see Where The Wild Things Are I put together a little treat bag for all of my cousins and spouses. You could do this as a surprise for your little kids when you take them to the movies, or even as a party favor! (I can’t wait to try this with bright, colorful bags and pretty ribbon!)

Here’s how you do it:
(note, Matt was the main mastermind behind the construction of this project! He’s so clever!)

1. Get some delicious, inexpensive candy and loot at the grocery store. I opted for M&M’s, Jr. Mints, an assortment of sour candies, and some glow-in-the-dark fangs (appropriate for a monster movie, right?)

2. Find an image that you want to print on your brown bags. Bring it up in a program that will allow you to edit and print projects. Type whatever you’d like to on the bag, then just send it through the printer. The brown bags are generally 5″ wide so set your printer accordingly. “Let the wild rumpus start!”

3. Fill the bag with your loot.

4. Fold the top of the bag down just a small amount, maybe 1/2 of an inch.

4. Get a piece of string or ribbon, about 2.5 feet, and place it under the fold.

5. Fold the bag over the string a few times…

6. Then tie it into a cute bow, and you’ve got yourself a handle!

As always, I love hearing when you try these tutorials! Let me know if you do! Enjoy!

*Movie Review:

The movie was great! Extremely well-done! I loved everything about it and definitely want to see it again! It was fun, adventurous, sad at times, a little scary…all around amazing! A definite must-see. Beautiful cinematography! I loved it!

  1. so creative! love it

  2. very fun project and super cute! I love these kinds of projects and tutorials. :)

  3. You are so creative! Thanks for inspiring me!-Christy Cowan

  4. Adorable!

  5. This is the best idea! I never even considered putting a paper bag through a printer. So many possibilities!

  6. that's a really cute great idea. thanks for sharing!

  7. So, so dang cute! I love this idea! So funny you mentioned the movie candy. I just took the kids to the dollar theater (where the candy is way more expensive than the movie ticket!) and had my 2 1/2 year-old, Joel smuggle in the grocery store loot in his pockets! Shameless, I know.

  8. So cute; I will copy for sure! I brought my kids and some friends to the movie and we smuggled some candy in from the dollar store. During the movie, my son's friend wouldn't eat his candy. I asked him if he was ok. He told me he saw a sign that said we couldn't bring our own candy in the movie. I felt bad. :o So since then, I have had a hard time smuggling because I felt guilty that a 7 year old wanted to do what was right and I didn't. I am sure I will get over it. LOL. It's crazy expensive!!!

  9. Heather. Where in the world do you come from?? This is SOOO cute and awesome! When you were little, did you wonder why I wasn't doing these amazing things for you? Your kid (and some day kidS) are so LUCKY to have you as a mom! Seriously. So fun and creative. And thanks for sharing it in a tutorial — increcredible!

  10. Ignore my previous spelling of incredible. Ha! I was just emphasizing.

  11. you are so darling! what an awesome project!i don't however smile on your smuggling and i know i don't have to tell you how your big brother feels about it.

  12. ps. what did you guys think of the movie? I hated it.

  13. Well Natalie and Richie, Maybe one day we'll discuss how the movie industry likes to rape us of our $, and then we can discuss the moral behind bringing candy into the theater. I would have no problem if the concessions were the same price as in the grocery store…of course I would buy it there. But when they mark it up like 800% for only dummies to buy and make me feel like a fool for even thinking of buying it, that's where I have the problem. Love ya!

  14. I love all things treats and all things bags. You guys are so crafty!

  15. This is why you are the Queen of Blogging. (Great pictures by the way. Loved the autumn leaves.)

  16. One of the theaters in Oceanside let's you bring in your own stuff, and they still have lines to buy theirs. I think they should all do it — they'd still make plenty of $.

  17. Actually Natalie, wasn't it you who brought an entire Chili's Dinner with me into the movies in Hawaii? I'm pretty sure you were with me. Am I wrong? Haha! That was fun!

  18. SO AWESOME! I'm posting about these tomorrow (if you don't mind). I wish I was in your little movie viewing group, not only would it be fun to go with you guys but we would've scored those totally rad bags!

  19. What neat little bags!(Oh, and a couple weeks ago I spent $4.08 on a BOTTLE of nestea iced tea. Normal sized glass bottle — at the theater. However, I couldn't say no, since I was SUPER thirsty, as breastfeeding makes you with a squirmy baby. Oi! It's ROBBERY!)

  20. freak.ing cute! I love that idea! And so true about bringing treats! Who really goes to the movies + doesn't have their bags/pockets filled with yummy treats? Great idea, thanks for sharing!

  21. Oh, thanks for sharing this. A great idea for easy party bags too. And the choice of candy is my fave.

  22. Heather, do you have any idea how much it costs a movie theater to bring in a first run movie?

  23. When Richie and I were seriously contemplating buying the Laie theater after it shut down we started to get an idea of just how EXPENSIVE it is to run a theater and how essential those sales are for the theater to survive. It's crazy. It totally made me feel differently about buying my concessions. HOWEVER it may be different with a small theater than with a big one.

  24. but you didn't buy the theater! Bringing candy and bottled waters into the theater is the only way to go! I even come in with Five Guy's french fries…but if it was Natalie's theater, I wouldn't dare. These are adorable Heather! Excellent choice in candy!

  25. p.s. don't ever ever ever feel guilty! never!

  26. Those bags are super cute! After working at a movie theater for 4 years I can say these things:-Concessions cost so much because a movie theater's income is roughly 15% ticket sales, 85% concession sales. The majority of profits from ticket sales go to the movie companies, so a theater has to charge more for food to cover expenses.-I still smuggle in candy, despite knowing this.-Bringing in entire meals is gross. I really hope the people who do this are kind enough to throw this stuff away on their way out. Yes, we get paid to pick up trash, but it's not much and picking up chicken bones and pizza crusts is way worse than sweeping up some popcorn and gummy bears.

  27. wow. you are the cutest crafty person i know. someday i wanna be you when i grow up. You are so good at making simple things special!xoxops. i love movie popcorn and i always get refills and take it home! hahaha lame.

  28. So cute! I've got to print on brown bags! SO fun! Thanks for sharing!

  29. AWESOME I love this idea. so simple and i will be using it all the time. heather, bringing your own treats is provident living at its finestxoxo

  30. Love this! I am definitely doing it for my little one's party. Thanks!
