Crib to Toddler Bed: We Made The Switch...

Matt and I weighed our options and decided to buckle down and get Cole into a bed. He just barely turned two, so he definitely could've stayed in his crib for much longer, but here are our reasons.

1. When the new baby comes, I DO NOT want two cribs.

2. We wanted Cole to get used to a bed before the baby came, so we wouldn't have to deal with it later.

3. Toddler beds are adorably cute!

Making The Decision

The decision between toddler bed or a twin was pretty easy for us. I totally and completely understand why people put their toddler straight into a twin, but for us, we considered Cole's size. The fact that he only gained about 1.5 pounds between the ages of 1-2 (grand total of 22 pound to date), and figured he wouldn't grow out of the toddler bed for a long, long time.

What Bed Did We Get?

We went to Ikea and got the most simple bed there was. I like it because it's paintable if I feel so inclined, it's slim, and longer than a crib. Some toddler beds are the same size as cribs so you can use the crib mattress for the bed, but we need the crib mattress for our new baby. So we got a "junior" bed. It's the same width, but a little longer. The displays had twin comforters on them, which opens up options for bedding.

How was the adjustment for Cole?

It couldn't have gone better! He loves it. He sleeps better, only yells once for a drink before he goes to bed as opposed to the 20 he did before, and he actually asks for naps and bedtime. It's a dream. I know that for many of you this was NOT the case. Every child is so different. As for us though, it was one of the better decisions we've made.

It's so gratifying when we make a decision between two good things and it turns out so well... Good job on making everyone happy!!

I am going to be doing this soon with my almost 2 year old and also want to get one of the Ikea toddler beds. Glad to hear how it was such a smooth transition. I hope mine is as pain free :)

I have a sleeping question for you! Does Cole sleep with a pillow and a blanket? If so, when did you introduce them?

Enzo doesn't have it yet and I am wondering if I am totally crazy and need to get with the program!

Hi Amber!

He does sleep with a blanket. He has been for a while. When he was about 1 he started sleeping with a small, lightweight blanket. Then probably about 7-8 months ago we put a bigger, thicker blanket on him because it's SO cold here. We haven't had any problems. We have ALWAYS frequently checked on him throughout the evening until we go to bed.

When we got this toddler bed, we got a pillow too. He thinks it's a fun idea, but he doesn't sleep well with it, so we don't use it.

Heather I love your blog. It's awesome because I'm going through a lot of the same decisions that you are. We are in the market for a toddler bed now as well for the exact same reasons. I'm glad to know it went to well for Cole. Oh and if it makes you feel any better, Kalani is 23 lbs. He hasn't gained weight in so long. Sounds like Cole.

Sometimes, I always doubt if kids are ready to switch to toddler beds. They might move a lot in their sleep and fall.
